Maccabi Snow Sports 2018

Posted: 30-Aug-2018 by Skiing

The Michael Coppel Theatrical Maccabi Snow Sports was held at Mt Buller on 6 August. Ninety competitors from New South Wales & Victoria competed in a slalom event for both skiing and snowboarding, across six age groups.

The race was held on the Skyline racecourse with each competitor doing two runs each. The times for the two runs were combined to give each racer an overall time. The competitors with the fastest times in each divisions were awarded the championship, with second and third placings being acknowledged with minor trophies.

The event was run by the Ajax Ski club on behalf of Maccabi. John Lindros and his team from Auscamp managed the event, keeping the event running smoothly. Michelle Coppel from Michael Coppel Presents continued her very generous sponsorship of the championships. David Cooper from Safety Dave sponsored the participation awards.

The race was held in foggy conditions on softening snow. This presented a challenge for all the competitors, with some quite a few competitors falling and missing gates. Despite this the racing was very close.

The award ceremony was held in the Mt Buller Cinema in the evening with all winners and competitors celebrating their efforts. The younger age groups were heavily contested. In the Division 5 Girls skiing (Grade 3 & Below), Clover Rogers was a convincing winner, with Phoebe Cherny and Amelie Kohn taking out the minor placings. Jasper Rogers was also a convincing winner in the boys Division 5. Jason Dodge and Kai Vorcheimer took out second and third respectively.

The Division 4 Boys (Grades 4 & 5) skiing saw an extremely Adam Weis defeat Raphael Kenpler and Charlie Lindros into the minor placings. In the girls event Faith Green comfortably won with Sarah Orner and Emily Nudel taking out the other places.

Division 3 Girls (Years 6 & 7) skiing was won by Livia Lazarow, followed by Pippa Davis and Ellie Frey. Avi Wolff beat Charlie Rozenes by just 0.28 seconds in the Division 3 Boys event, which was the closest result for the day. Jeremy Borsky came in in third place.

Division 2 Girls (Years 8 & 9) skiing was won by Olivia Baron with Abby Adams coming second and Mia Boyarsky third. In the Boys, Jonah Bell won with Joshua Borsky second and Natanel Manoy third.

Alecia Vidor beat Lili Cooper and Missy Manoy in the Division 1 girls (Year 10 to 12). In the boys, Jasper Harris beat Daniel Lindross into second place, with Guy Rosenberg coming in third.

The snowboarding races were not heavily contested with only Division 1, 2 and 3 boys being contested. Aurelio Orsini won the Division 3 Boys, Sam Wein the Division 2 and Guy Rosenberg defeated Sonny Morris in the Division 1 Boys event.

In a special award, Adina Wolters was honoured for her contribution to Jewish skiing events. Adina has supported both the Jewish Championships and the Jewish Interschool’s for over 15 years. It is only with the support of dedicated volunteers such as Adina, that the event continues to be such a success.
